Spelman Student Demands

* Indicates an item that must be implemented as soon as possible.

Housing

  • Timely emergency grant application for juniors, seniors, transfer students, commuter students and Pauline E. Drake Scholars*

  • College housing scholarship for students who are not eligible for government funding*

  • Contractual partnerships with Metro Atlanta Apartment Complexes or hotels that include reduced rates for Spelman students. While this may not be possible this year, we expect that the college follows its precedent for student displacement in future years. (re. Building of the Beverly Tatum Suites and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when students were housed in local apartments and continued to pay Room and Board to Spelman).

  • Upperclass students with housing scholarships and housing contracts should always have the option of on-campus housing *

Covid-19 Protocol

Meals*

  • The implementation of a menu form for meal items during isolation/quarantine
from a menu developed by a campus health nutritionist. This menu must include options for people with dietary restrictions.

 Coursework*

  • The implementation of academic procedures that allow students recovering from COVID-19 to continue or pause academic responsibilities without having to face repercussions. These should include:

    • Time accommodations for assignments.

    • Excused absences until a student receives a negative COVID-19 test.

    • A system wherein students can continue to participate in their classes and submit class-work if they desire.

 Testing *

  • A negative PCR test needs to be required of on-campus  and commuter students after ALL breaks.

  • Isolated/quarantined students need to be tested day 7 and 10 before allowed to leave.

  • The implementation of free on-campus testing for commuter students.

Procedures*

  • A set time period for quarantine move-ins and outs.

  • Proper medicine needs to be provided, as determined by a healthcare professional.

  • Basic toiletries, bed sheets, and cleaning materials need to be provided.

Contacting *

  • Immediate notification of a positive COVID-19 test sent directly to students.

  • A 24-hour medical professional emergency hot-line for students in isolation/quarantine.

  •  Frequent check-ins with isolate/quarantined individuals.

Transparency

  • College decisions regarding but not limited to Covid-19 protocols, the 2021-2022 learning model, and housing decisions should be conveyed to students and faculty in frequent newsletters.

  • The student body (not limited to SGA) must be involved in all searches for a new President and Provost (or any other positions that open).

  • The College must revisit its oppressive codes of conduct with regard to the protesting and/or speaking out against the College. Such as in the College’s Protest Policy, and the restrictions faced by student representatives of the college such as in the SGA, Student Council, Resident Assistants Program, and Miss Spelman.

  • The College must release its full donor list.

Transportation

  • Implementation of a commuter transportation stipend for gas, Marta passes, and Uber/Lyft *

    • We recognize that Spelman has subsidized Marta passes and a $400 lyft commute program for up to 500 students. We deem this insufficient in solving the transportation disparities caused by the school as $400 is not expected to last for the entire academic year.

  • Reduced price parking passes at Spelman College. And, guaranteed parking for all commuter students. *

Meal Plans

  • A reasonably priced meal plan for off-campus juniors, seniors, and transfer students that will include:*

    • Reduced “commuter all access” meal plan rates. Current rates are not priced for what they are worth. ($1,710.00: 100 meals, $200 dining dollars; and $3,134.00: 3 meals per day, 7 days per week, $200 Dining Dollars.)

  • The indefinite reinstatement of meal tickets for all commuter students. (re. 2017 Spelman NAN hunger strike commuter meal voucher agreement).*

Virtual Learning

  • A list of classes offering a hybrid or virtual option should be listed publicly to students.*

  • A work study position should be implemented to support professors who are willing to teach a hybrid model class. This will include

    • Providing cameras in classroom for virtual students *

    • Having a work-study student TA manage the virtual set-up*

    • Setting a class digital communication platform (GroupMe, Slack, etc.) so that virtual students can communicate/participate in class. *

  • Commuter students who do not have 24-hour access to the College’s equipment should be provided with the necessary equipment and resources to equitably complete their course work: â€‹â€‹

    • Provide WiFi access to commuter students who are unable to purchase it.

    • Loan or purchase computers for off-campus students who are unable to purchase them*
